Electricity Bills Rise Because of CARBON TAX

Electricity will be more expensive in the future, not only for UK citizens.

Renewable and nuclear power companies will dom big windfall earningsafter the british government announced their planst o raise the new carbon tax.

The tax level is higher than most oft he experts would have expected. Critics say that „the tax was geared more at raising revenue for the Treasury than achieving its stated aim of incentivising companies to build low-carbon forms.“

The energy tycoons will still benefit as tax on coal and gas emissions is passed to the poor consumers

Coal and gas plants allow to pass on the cost to the user as higher bills. Existing nuclear reactors and will pay nearly nothing, but they will still benefit from biger electricity prices that the consumers pay.

The electricity costs in UK will most probably rise by 12% by 2016, putting up to 110,000 more households in struggeling position– means a household that is spending more than 10% of its monthly income on power bills. Head of UK and EU policy Ben Caldecott said that although the carbon floor price would benefit investors in low-carbon generation, it did not give certainty because the level could be changed in future budgets. To give investors real certainty, he said, the level of tax should be guaranteed by long-term contracts.

It is a shame again how the big monopoly guys earn billions while destroying the earth and than pay no taxes because they have a few renewable energy sources.
It is really ridiculous but what will you do about it ? It will be us hwo pay the higher bills and it will be us hwo will have to also fight the polution these companies cause. We need alot of strength these days.

Can Algae Biomass replace jet oil?

Did you know that air travel accounts for around 4 percent of the green house gasses produced worldwide? Richard Brandson, boss of the Virgin group that owns Virgin Airlines, rises up among the many green minded businessmen in his efforts to clean his transport business.

Through photosynthesis, plants capture carbon dioxide and sunlight and convert it into oxygen and biomass. That’s how they get algal biomass to use as aviation fuel.

The International Air Transport Association also supports the use of algae fuel in air travel. Moreover, association sets a goal for its members: replacing 10%  of their fuel need with alternative fuels by 2017.

Branson, on his part, personally or via his venture company Virgin Green Fund has been investing in biofuel companies such as Solazyme and Gevo. Marc Gunther at greenbiz.com quotes him saying “Algae could be a very good aviation fuel” and comparing en masse algae production with $100 a barrel oil during the Conde Nast Traveler’s get together for the businessmen in tourism.

It does sound to turn about a competitive and clean alternative.

5 Signs to Tell a Green Company

The green hype shapes the markets. Leading firms worldwide have already acknowledged the necessity of sustainable and green trade for their long-term survival. Andrea Learned in her blog ‘Learned On’ says that we are now reaching a historic point in the sustainability realm, whereby “the consumers most brands want to reach are savvy to ‘green wash’( …).  Instead, these folks may soon EXPECT sustainability from brands, and from all angles”.
If you, as a conscious consumer, prefer products and brands of green companies, probaby you are already cautious of those green washers. For the newbes it would be handy to clarify those ‘angles’ Learned mentions.
Cooney in his book ‘Building a Green Small Business’ dated 2009, defines green business with reference to its “enduring commitment to environmental principles in its operations”. I find it convenient to say that, green thinking manifests itself in five moments of in corporate decision making process: green input, green production, green fleet management, green marketing and green HR.

Green Input: What I mean by green input is prefering to trade with suppliers who are on their behalf run their business in an ecofriendly manner. Gradually more and more companies set such criteria in their supplier selection criteria. This also includes buying from the locals to minimize harmful gasses produced due to transport.

Green Production: Production process is often though to be the key distinctive of green companies. Authorities as well as consumers raise eyebrows on the massive emission of greenhouse gasses due to big industries. So, companies all around the world face the need to reduce GHGs and they begin to utilize alternative energy sources such as biofuel. This is also related to reducing water consumption and waste production. Recycling and upcycling (the process of retaining high quality in a closed-loop industrial cycle) should be integral parts of the production process.

Green Fleet Management: Green organisations introduce greener vehicles into their fleets which provide the lowest CO2 emission.  Diesel, dual-fuel, hybrid and electric vehicles or can be prefered. Distribution channels should be managed accordingly.

Green Marketing: What I mean by ‘green marketing’ here is not positioning with reference to the sustainability, but adhering to eco-friendly principles in marketing efforts. The key is going as paperless as possible; so that the company can help reduce carbon output, save the forests, and reduce the amount of hazardous materials used in the print industry. Email marketing and voice marketing are the first to come to mind. Not to forget the whole packaging industry: green products should be packaged in recycled paper.

Green HR: Environmentally approach to human resources of a firm would be basically finding the right skill in the area of that firm and hiring homeworkers as much as possible. Introducing and encouraging ride-share programs in the work place could be a green offering. Green-minded HR people would also incorporate training programs for the employees on environmental issues.
